Introduction

Established in Cairns in 1992, JUTE Theatre is a significant regional theatre company driving the development, co-production, national and international touring of contemporary Australian plays from the regions. JUTE passionately engages others in the telling of new stories that stimulate the mind, revitalize the spirit and lift the heart, providing a true sense of true belonging. Since 2004 JUTE Theatre has operated from its home at the Centre of Contemporary Arts - a significant regional infrastructure, funded by State Government.

What people have said over the years about JUTE Theatre.

Queensland Arts Council's Ontour onstage program has worked closely with JUTE for over 10 years and has undertaken successful regional tours of its work. JUTE has also undertaken two presentations at the Long Paddock Forum and their reputation nationally is quickly gaining momentum with a wide spread of presenters expressing interest in further discussions for future tours. JUTE Theatre has also been the driving force behind the undoubted success of the Theatre to the Edge concept in Queensland and the Northern Territory and this concept is now been developed to extend nationally.
JANE ATKINS, Associate Director Queensland Arts Council
(2008)

Queensland Theatre Company and JUTE Theatre have had a long association. JUTE Theatre has always been a part of our regional program and the relationship continues to change and grow. Over the last two years particularly, JUTE's work has continually raised its profile and its standards. By seeking feedback from other theatre professionals, JUTE has seen growth in audience numbers, improvement in script development strategies and quality of production standards, both in design and performance. We look forward to planning future initiatives and seeking suitable ideas for possible co-productions.

Michael Gow, Artistic Director, Queensland Theatre Company (2008)

They punch above their weight. It is rare in Australia for a company to sustain the existing writers in its community, but go out of its way to develop them in a positive and active manner is worth recognising…This organization is a national living treasure.

Peter Matheson – Dramaturg (2008)

Playlab is proud to be a partner of JUTE Theatre and to support its rigorous new play development programs and its continuing commitment to creating new work of, about and for Cairns. The north of Queensland is a powerful and unique landscape that deserves a company the calibre of JUTE telling its stories.
KATHRYN KELLY, Executive Director Playlab Inc
(2007)

One of the special things about JUTE Theatre is that they are building a new audience for theatre productions. They are doing valuable work in fostering local writers and expressing the unique voice of the Tropical North. The richness of cultural life is measured in part by the diversity of experiences available, and JUTE Theatre certainly brings lots of new work to the stage to add to the cultural fabric of the region.
PHIL FINKELSTEIN, Manager Cairns Civic Theatre & ticketLiNK
(2007)

JUTE Theatre is a company of national significance, in it's spearheading of regional theatre across Australia, and through its emphasis on the development of new work by regional writers, profiling their work for a wider audience. One project that has afforded regional artists such opportunities is through QPAC and JUTE's development, co-production and touring of My Of-Course Life by Toni Allayialis. This has proved to be an extremely successful venture, not only in terms of audience numbers, but also in the profiling of regional artists and their work, on both a state and national level. Collaborations such as this are important to QPAC in ensuring we engage meaningfully with artists, arts companies and audiences based outside of the metropolitan area. Through such collaborative efforts the cultural lives of Queenslanders are further enriched.
JOHN KOTZAS, Artistic Director Queensland Performing Arts Centre
