JUTE Theatre Company Production of 'Rosa' by Roz Pappalardo
‘Rosa’ by Roz Pappalardo is a joyous performance brought to life through songs and storytelling, a tale steeped in the migrant memoirs of Far North Queensland. This one-woman show slips seamlessly between Cyclone Larry in Mena Creek in 2006 to Fondachello, Sicily in the 40's.Produced by JUTE Theatre Company and written and performed by Roz Pappalardo, 'Rosa', takes the audience on an evocative journey in song and musical mastery.
'Rosa' was first performed on JUTE stage in July last year as part of the 'Two 4 One' show where it received many standing ovations, since then The Cassowary Coast Regional Council couldn’t resist presenting this wonderful play to their audience in the Johnstone Shire Hall and by doing so they are bringing a story back to where it belongs, to where it all came from.
What the reviewers said about 'Rosa' performed in 2011:“To say that Roz Pappalardo’s accomplishment as playwright, actor and singer is a tour de force is an understatement. The audience was blown away.” (Reviewer Glyn Davies for Arts Nexus, July 18)
“Pappalardo’s voice is powerful & she sings her original songs with great passion. The audience seemed mesmerised..” (Denise Carter, The Cairns Post, July 19) - read full review here

I love the moment a new artistic idea finds its way into the space between two creative people - the ripples have started and will soon engulf the hearts and artistic dreaming of a whole creative team. Those moments are precious and I can look back on every project I have directed or been involved in the development of, to pinpoint that moment that the creative vision was sparked and this show is no different.
When you live in a stunning place like Far North Queensland, the environment inserts itself into our very thinking; it's incredibly present in our lives, from big blue sky balmy winters, to tropical downpours, cyclones, and the sometimes crazy making humidity, it all feeds into our stories. Innisfail and surrounding towns have had more than their fair share of these dramatic forces of nature, so it is no surprise when cyclones, a sea of whispering cane and fireworks at the local Innisfail show make it into a play by a woman born and raised in the region. It's what I love about the writing that JUTE produces, it is infused with the history of our region, it speaks to us because we recognise it, we live it, we love it.
It has been a privilege to work with Roz to develop this play and such a joy to bring it back to its point of origin in Innisfail.
"To say that Roz Pappalardo’s accomplishment as playwright, actor and
singer is a tour de force is an understatement. The audience was blown
away as was I, by the audacity of the enterprise and the brilliant way
it was carried off. With a long tradition (nearly 20
years) of well-attended professional productions, the company can
rightly be proud of its unique achievements in telling us our own
stories with panache. (Reviewer Glyn Davies for Arts Nexus, July 18) What the audience had to say after Rosa's first preview: |
" Outstanding production - world class. Don't miss it." (Mission Beach Tourism – Queensland Australia, July 16) "Pappalardo’s voice is powerful & she sings her original songs with great passion. The audience seemed mesmerised… you’d be mad to miss it" (Denise Carter, The Cairns Post, July 19) - read full review here |
