"JUTE has once again worked its magic upon Cairns theatregoers who were
privileged to see one of its most intriguing presentations to date at
the opening night (and world premiere) of Finegan Kruckemeyer’s latest
play. If the title is intriguing, so too are its five youthful
characters and the circumstances in which they find themselves... "

"At Sea, Staring Up, is an engaging new Australian play at JUTE Theatre. Written by international playwright Finegan Kruckemeyer, it traces the inner and outer journeys of five characters motivated by love. One of the most striking aspects of this play is the language, which is smooth and beautifully poetic. Kruckemeyer creates a world that is almost hypnotic."

from Director Suellen
MaunderA new play by
internationally acclaimed playwright Finegan Kruckemeyer, At Sea, Staring Up
will make you want to hold hands with your loved one, make that phone call
to family far away and maybe do something a little crazy to impress your new
love.
At Sea, Staring Up is a richly poetic magical play with five delightful
characters who jump off the page. Finegan creates worlds that are magical
and real all at the same time. It is one of the most beautiful pieces of
writing I have had the privilege to direct and it’s performed by five young actors
in the early stages of their careers, for whom the work was written. A sweeping
story of five lives across three continents, this epic tale surprises and
delights with magical leaps of imagination.
Told through poetic language this
intriguing script is brought to life with superb acting and an amazing set.
Enjoy,
Suellen

Interviews: Meet the Creative Team
MEET LUKE EDE
The wonderful 'At Sea, Staring Up' Production Designer
1. WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR LOVE?
I once spent two days making a zombie donkey piñata for someone I love then beat all the candy out of it outside a Mexican restaurant in Kings Cross.
2. HOW DID YOU BECOME A DESIGNER?
My whole life revolved around The Muppets when I was a kid. I started building puppets because of them and it was a snowball effect from there. So I guess I can blame Kermit.
3. IF YOU COULD HAVE ONE SUPER POWER WHAT WOULD IT BE & WHY?
I would like to be able to turn into a cartoon character, because I love the laws of the cartoon universe!

Meet Jason Glenwright
'At Sea, Staring Up’ Lighting Designer & true lover of 'lights'
1. WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR LOVE?
I have searched, driven and been committed to everything that is love.
2. HOW DID YOU BECOME A LIGHTING DESIGNER?
I always noticed the lighting used in high school productions and just became fixated by it! So I joined the schools technical team and discovered this passion for theatrical lighting. After High School, I studied lighting further at QUT and by doing that, helped form great connections with some incredibly inspirational theatre practitioners from the industry. Plenty of design work grew from there.
3. IF YOU COULD HAVE ONE SUPER POWER WHAT WOULD IT BE & WHY?
I wish I could fly so I could touch up the focus of lights in the roof during a lighting plot session if need be!

Meet Finegan kruckemeyer
‘At Sea, Staring Up’ Playwright & all round nice guy
1. WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR LOVE?
Not to subvert the question too much, but it really is what love has
done for me. Meeting Essie gave me a newfound sense of purpose, made the
great times better, and the quiet ones okay. She moved to an island so
we could live together, and she accepted my hand in marriage when i
offered it three months after we started dating. What I have done for
love is loved her back, unconditionally, and always realised how lucky I
am.
2. HOW DID YOU BECOME A PLAYWRIGHT?
I tried other things in the arts, like acting, teaching and stand-up,
which I enjoyed, but just didn’t feel the same affinity for. Generous
mentors and friends in Adelaide schooled me in theatre as a
teenager.....

Meet Quincy Grant
The delightful ‘At Sea, Staring Up’ Composer & Sound Designer
1. WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR LOVE?
I have given my life freely to another, and followed her to the ends of the earth.
2. HOW DID YOU BECOME A COMPOSER & SOUND DESIGNER?
I grew up in the country and from a young age always played music and made things, so I’ve just kept doing that to this day. I started off teaching myself and then went to the city to study at music schools. From there I’ve been writing and playing music ever since: for orchestras, bands, theatre, film and everything else. The world of imagination and sound is where I love living.
3. IF YOU COULD HAVE ONE SUPER POWER WHAT WOULD IT BE & WHY?
Flying – how fantastic that would be: to soar above the earth and the sea. And I wouldn’t mind trying immortality too: just once.

Raise money whilST enjoying brilliant new Australian theatre
Are you a charity, sporting or social group looking to raise funds whilst experiencing great theatre? Why not consider a fundraising night out at a JUTE Theatre Company production.
In 2011, fundraising groups raised $3375 for local charities, social & sporting organisations - all while having a great night out at the theatre!
HOW IT WORKS
It's easy - simply get a group of 30 or more people together and JUTE Theatre Company will give your group half the ticket price. A fantastic way to raise money whilst supporting local professional theatre.
Your group will need to buy a minimum of 30 tickets from us at a discounted half price rate of $15 per ticket (the standard adult price is $30). Your group then sell the tickets to your contacts as a fundraising initiative at the standard JUTE adult ticketing cost of $30 each, therefore raising $450 for the 30 tickets sold ($15 per ticket x 30 = $450).
