'When The Rain Stops Falling' by Andrew Bovell

3 August 2012 - 4 August 2012

In this epic play, Andrew Bovell (Lantana, Scenes from a Separation, Holy Day) weaves a complex web of secrets, lies, misplaced loyalty and betrayal. This work re-affirms Bovell’s place as a remarkable chronicler of the Australian experience and one of our greatest story tellers.

After a stellar premiere season in Townsville, JUTE is thrilled to bring Theatre iNQ's production of this work to Cairns audiences for two nights only.
'A stunning, gut-wrenching piece of theatre. Once seen it will never be forgotten. ' - Adelaide Theatre Guide

"When the Rain Stops Falling” won the 2008 Victorian Premier's Literary Award and the 2008 Queensland Premier's Literary Awards and is now brought to the JUTE Audience for only 2 nights, Friday 3rd & Saturday 4th of August. Suellen Maunder, Artistic Director/CEO of JUTE Theatre Company, is proud to present this incredibly clever and compelling play in Cairns.

The play is one of those great stories, just like a great movie or book that makes you stretch your imagination and ask yourself questions about our future and the part we play in it. You replay the scenes in your head and the more you do so the more you discover new meanings and ideas.

The play is like a break from your everyday life, you stop, watch it, get back to your life, something has changed in you, but you’re not quite sure what…

'This is theatre of rare intricacy and resonance….' - Sydney Morning Herald

It starts with a phone call. Gabriel York’s estranged son, Andrew, has contacted him. He wants to visit. He wants to know his father; to discover why he abandoned his own son. Andrew will not find the answers to his questions but as the stories of his ancestors are played out, the terrible history of his family unravels.

This critically acclaimed play by Andrew Bovell (Lantana, Scenes from a Separation, Holy Day) traces four generations of the same family through a trail of love, loss, guilt and consequence. This is an incredibly clever and compelling story of family and the history that bind us all.
