Write Sparks Wednesday! Over the coming weeks, well be introducing this years Write Sparkers to you, and the stories they are working on. At the end of their course, there will be a play reading session, on Tuesday August 1st, so pencil the date in for now.

Sara Isherwoods story, titled Chinese Garden is a story about her own family - five generations of regional Chinese market gardeners and cooks. Shes the last in the line and the only female.

One of the family stories is about her granddad, from the 1950s. Her grandad used to cook for his family on an open fire at the farm. His wife, Saras mother’s mother, had died, and he was bringing up three kids alone in the bush.

Years later, he ran several cafes in Brisbane and Townsville. I remember watching him make wontons, says Sara. He cut up the filling with just a Chinese cleaver and folded the pastry around it to make the ingot shaped ones. He was so fast. He used to tell me, You, eat, eat! He’d tell my sister, You, study! Study!, Sara recalls.

It’s about ancestors and about food, connection, and belonging. For me, cooking and gardening are my art forms. So, food is a vital part of this story.

Throwback Thursday: we can't believe it's already been 2 months since JUTE hosted Perseverance Street's GRIT at Bulmba-ja. GRIT: The Stories. The Town. The Music. received rave reviews from audiences and critics alike. The regional GRIT tour is an example of a new touring model we're developing to help regional theatre companies take their work further afield and reach more audiences. Before the Opening Night performance there were two prologues based on local stories. We will continue working on the model with the Queensland regional theatre sector under our new program, DARTS (Driving and Activating the Regional Theatre Sector). For more information on DARTS, visit www.jute.com.au/au

JUTE Theatre Company

From humble beginnings in regional obscurity, stretched and moulded through years of hard work, fuelled by tenacity, rigour and persistence, JUTE Theatre Company has become a dynamic, award-winning, nationally regarded new work theatre company, sitting at the forefront of industry practice and consistently seeking new boundaries to explore in theatre practice.

Drawing on over three decades of industry experience, JUTE is a crucible in which new stories and perspectives are forged that inspire our communities and allow us all to reimagine ourselves through powerful shared theatre experiences. JUTE yields the floor to regional voices to examine the marginal, the unexplored, the unforeseen, to create stories that impact us deeply and change our world.

We do this through a wide range of inclusive programs of new work development, productions and touring, our Dare to Dream regional and remote tours with residencies, training, mentorship and community outreach.
